For four generations the Lucas family has been dedicated to crafting impressive wines that reflect the best of Moldovan terroir and local winemaking traditions. However, the first winemakers of the Luca family have endured many obstacles in life to make their dream of a private winery come to reality today.

In 1949, under the Soviet Union regime that forbade any private property, the Lucas’ vineyards along with the rest of their property were nationalized and the whole family was deported to a labor camp in Siberia. After severe years of deportation, a part of the family managed to return to the family’s main occupation – winemaking. To preserve their skills and knowledge, the Lucas worked at a state-owned winery.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the youngest two generations began rebuilding the family estate and in 2011 presented for the first time the Carpe Diem Wines.

Today, Ion Luca Jr is the winemaker and estate manager who supervises all cycles of the family’s business
